GATE Download Page

On this page you can find the latest stable release of GATE Developer and Embedded, as well as the latest nightly built snapshots.

Quick Start

Download the installer for GATE Developer 9.0.1 (~57MB):

See the User Guide for documentation.

GATE Developer 9.0.1 works best with a 64bit version of Java 8 or later JDK. This is widely available from GNU/Linux package repositories. The AdoptOpenJDK website provides packages for various operating systems, and is particularly suitable for Windows users - ensure you enable the "JavaSoft (Oracle) registry keys" option in the installer, otherwise gate.exe will not work. For users of the latest M1-based Mac computers, suitable JDKs are available from the Zulu Community page, select the "ARM 64-bit" architecture.

For other GATE products please go to GATE Cloud or follow the links to the source code from our GitHub pages.

NOTE: if you are upgrading from one version of GATE to another you must delete your user configuration file before running the new version. The user configuration file is typically ~/.gate.xml on Unix-style platforms (including Mac OS X), C:\Documents and Settings\username\gate.xml on Windows XP, and C:\Users\username\gate.xml on Windows Vista or later.

Also note that saved applications from GATE developer 8.4.1 or earlier will need to be upgraded for use in 8.5 and later, details can be found in the user guide.

Detailed instructions

Release 9.0.1 (March 10th 2021)

Most users should download the installer package (~57MB):

Alternatively, if the installer does not work for you, you can download a zip archive which can be unpacked anywhere. See the user guide for instructions.

GATE 9.0.1 requires at least Java 8 to run, and Mac users must install the full JDK, not just the JRE.

The installer and the distro ZIP file provide only the core of GATE Developer. Individual plugins will be downloaded on demand the first time they are required, which means GATE may appear slow the first time you load the ANNIE or OpenNLP applications - subsequent runs will be much faster once the plugins are cached locally.

Release 7.1 (November 30th 2012)

This release of GATE requires a recent Java 6 or 7 (no earlier than Java 6 update 10, 1.6.0_10). This release is NOT compatible with Java 8 - if you use Java 8 you should download the latest snapshot instead. The Windows installer will direct you to the appropriate download page if you do not have Java at all, or if your version is too old. Mac, Linux and Solaris users who do not have an appropriate JVM installed already can download one from Oracle's download page - for Mac OS X you must install the JDK, not the JRE, for other platforms the JRE is sufficient (but the JDK is still recommended).

If the installers don't work for you, you can download the following packages. You will need to provide your own Java VM (version 6.0 or higher) and set your JAVA_HOME appropriately. Details are in the "getting started" chapter of the user guide.

The BIN, SRC and ALL packages all include the full set of GATE plugins and all the libraries GATE requires to run, including sample trained models for the LingPipe and OpenNLP plugins.
